A small urban yard does not operate in isolation. Water follows elevation, pavement, rooflines and drainage infrastructure—not property boundaries.

At one Old Town Alexandria townhome, the backyard occupied the lowest point of the block. Runoff arrived from neighboring downspouts and an alley before accumulating in a space that still needed to function as a residential landscape.

Read the flow before designing the solution.

The first task was not selecting plants or materials. It was reading the water: where it entered, where it concentrated, which existing surfaces accelerated it and which interventions the owner could realistically maintain.

That wider reading changed the project. Treating the visible wet area alone would have addressed the symptom while ignoring the system delivering water to it.

Stack functions within the footprint.

The resulting retrofit combined several roles in limited space. Permeable hardscape supported circulation while allowing infiltration. Rain-garden and retention features created capacity for incoming water. Upcycled raised beds and edible planting added productive residential use.

The objective was not to make water disappear. It was to slow it, distribute it and give it useful places to go.

Make maintenance part of the design.

A technically impressive landscape can still fail if its care requirements are opaque or unrealistic. Client education was therefore part of the intervention rather than a handoff after construction.

Materials, planting and maintenance expectations were considered together so the system could remain legible and adaptable as site conditions changed.

See small projects as distributed infrastructure.

This distinction matters across the Chesapeake watershed. Residential projects may appear modest individually, but they are repeated thousands of times across dense communities. Each one can either pass runoff downstream or become part of a distributed system of practical watershed infrastructure.

The transferable lesson is straightforward: read the complete site, acknowledge off-site inputs, combine functions and design for the people who will maintain the result.
